My Unplanned Yet Unforgettable Trip
How It All Started
I’ll be honest with you — this trip to Kashmir was never part of my grand travel plans. It was one of those random, “What if we just go?” kind of decisions.
A friend called one evening, complaining about city life, and the next thing I knew, we were booking tickets to the Paradise on Earth. No research, no itinerary — just pure excitement.
And let me tell you, spontaneity worked in our favor!
Kashmir isn’t just one place — it’s a collection of magical landscapes, cozy towns, bustling bazaars, and peaceful villages. You have Jammu with its spiritual charm, Srinagar with its lakes and gardens, Gulmarg for adventure lovers, and the valleys of Pahalgam and Sonmarg for that postcard-perfect beauty.
Now, after experiencing it all, here are the 5 best places in Kashmir I personally recommend. I’m also slipping in a few tips on restaurants, clubs, and hidden gems that made my trip even better.
1. Srinagar – The Heart of Kashmir

If Kashmir is a poem, Srinagar is the opening line — it instantly hooks you. My first morning here was on a shikara (a traditional wooden boat) gliding across the Dal Lake. The reflection of snow-covered mountains in the water made me question if this was real life.
What I Loved Most
Shikara ride at Dal Lake during sunrise.
Strolling through Mughal Gardens (Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh).
The floating market — where shopkeepers row to you.
Where to Eat
I stumbled upon Ahdoos Restaurant for an authentic wazwan feast — the mutton rogan josh was heavenly.
If you’re in the mood for something more modern, Lounge Seven serves great coffee and has a cozy vibe perfect for evenings.
2. Gulmarg – The Adventure Wonderland

From Srinagar, we drove to Gulmarg, and I swear, the road itself felt like a scene from a travel documentary. Tall pine trees, streams cutting through the meadows, and the air — crisp and cold enough to wake your soul.
Why Gulmarg Stands Out
The Gulmarg Gondola — one of the highest cable cars in the world.
Skiing and snowboarding in winter.
Trekking and horse riding in summer.
Even if you’re not into sports, just standing there with snowflakes landing on your face is an experience worth having.
Where to Chill
I found a little place called Highland Park Restaurant — it’s got a beautiful view of the mountains and serves hot chocolate that can warm up even the coldest of days.
3. Pahalgam – The Valley of Shepherds

Pahalgam feels like it was painted by nature itself. The Lidder River runs through the valley, and the sound of rushing water became my background music here.
Top Experiences
Betaab Valley — perfect for photography and picnics.
Aru Valley — peaceful and less crowded.
Rafting in the Lidder River for a dose of adrenaline.
Food Tip
Pahalgam is not just about beauty; it’s got some tasty secrets too. Try Dana Pani Restaurant for a comforting bowl of rajma chawal.
And if you want to spend the evening somewhere lively, Pine & Peak Hotel’s lounge is perfect for drinks and good music.
4. Sonmarg – The Meadow of Gold

Sonmarg was one of those places where I thought, “Okay, now this is my favorite,” until the next destination came along. It’s about 80 km from Srinagar, but worth every minute of the drive.
Highlights
Thajiwas Glacier trek — not too difficult and insanely beautiful.
Pony rides through lush green meadows.
Snow activities in winter months.
The views here make you forget about time. One moment it’s sunny, the next a mist rolls in and transforms the whole scenery.
Where to Refuel
There aren’t too many big restaurants here, but small dhabas serve the best Kahwa (traditional Kashmiri tea). I had mine with fresh bread, and it’s something I still dream about.
5. Kupwara – The Untouched Beauty

Kupwara isn’t as commercial as the other spots, and maybe that’s why I loved it so much. It’s pure, raw, and feels like stepping into another era. Wide meadows, dense forests, and small streams — it’s the kind of place where you just breathe and let go.
Must-See Places
Bangus Valley — less crowded, more authentic.
Seemab Valley — perfect for camping and fishing.
Local markets for handmade crafts.
Where to Eat
Kupwara isn’t big on restaurants, but that’s part of the charm. I had a home-cooked meal at a local guesthouse — saffron rice, freshly baked bread, and mutton yakhni. Absolutely unforgettable.
Quick Tips for First-Time Visitors
Do’s
Dress in layers — Kashmir’s weather changes fast.
Try local food like gushtaba, kahwa, and nadru yakhni.
Respect local culture — people are warm and welcoming.
Don’ts
Don’t rush your trip. Spend at least 7–10 days if possible.
Don’t stick only to touristy spots — explore villages too.
Don’t forget cash — some remote areas have no ATMs.
Final Thoughts
Kashmir wasn’t on my travel radar that week, but going there was one of the best last-minute decisions I’ve ever made. Each place had its own flavor — Srinagar for its charm, Gulmarg for thrill, Pahalgam for peace, Sonmarg for changing moods, and Kupwara for untouched beauty.
If you’re planning your trip, here’s my recommendation:
Mix it up — visit the popular spots for their beauty and comfort, but also go off the beaten path for that raw, authentic connection with nature. And most importantly, keep your plans a little loose. Sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you never saw coming.
